  1. # Javicle - a JSON Video Composition Language
  2. JVCL (pronounced "Javicle") is a JSON DSL for audio/video transformations.
  3. Under the hood, it's all shell commands: `ffmpeg`, `mediainfo` and so on.
  4. JVCL provides higher-level semantics for working with these lower level tools.
  5. # A Quick Example
  6. Say you want to split a portion of a video into ten-second chunks. With ffmpeg
  7. and bash, you might do something like this:

  32. Yes, the JVCL is longer, but I think many would agree it is easier to read and maintain.
  33. **As the number of media assets and operations grows, hand-crafted shell scripts with magical
  34. ffmpeg incantations become ever more inscrutable.**
  35. JVCL is designed for readability and maintainability. JVCL will continue to evolve towards greater
  36. coverage of the full capabilities of ffmpeg.
  37. # Who is JVCL not for?
  38. If you like GUIs, JVCL is probably not for you.
  39. JVCL is not a replacement for Final Cut Pro or even iMovie.
  40. # Who is JVCL for?
  41. JVCL is for people who like CLIs and automation.
  42. JVCL is for people with relatively simple video composition needs (for now),
  43. since the range of operations supported is limited.
  44. # Concepts
  45. In JVCL there are a few main concepts: spec files, assets and operations.
  46. ## JVCL Spec Files
  47. A JVCL spec file is just a regular JSON file that happens to contain a single JSON object,
  48. whose properties are `assets` and `operations`.
  49. When you run `jvcl` on a spec file, it will load the `assets`, then perform the `operations` in order.
  50. Unlike most JSON, comments *are* allowed in JVCL spec files:
  51. * A line comment starts with `//` and continue to the end of the line
  52. * A multi-line block syntax starts with `/*` and ends with `*/`
  53. ### Executing a JVCL Spec
  54. To execute a spec stored in the file `my-spec.json`, you would run:
  55. ```shell script

  62. #### Scratch Directory
  63. Output assets will be placed in the scratch directory, unless otherwise specified
  64. in the spec file. By default, JVCL will create a new temporary directory to use as the scratch
  65. directory. You can set the scratch directory explicitly using the `-t` or `--temp-dir` option:

  69. #### Dry Running
  70. Use the `-n` or `--no-exec` option to print out the commands that would have been run,
  71. but do not actually run anything.

  75. Note that this breaks JVCL operations that require information from any assets created by
  76. previous operations: since the command did not actually run, the intermediate asset was
  77. never created.

  79. To view a list of all `jvcl` command-line options, run `jvcl -h` or `jvcl --help`
  80. ## Assets
  81. Assets are your media files: generally image, audio and video files.
  82. All assets have a name and a path.
  83. Input assets are defined using the `assets` array of a JVCL spec.
  84. For input assets, the path can be a file or a URL. URL-based assets will be downloaded
  85. to the scratch directory. This can be overridden using the `dest` property on the asset.
  86. Operations produce one or more output assets, as specified in the `creates` property of
  87. an operation JSON object.
  88. For output assets, the path will be within the scratch directory.
  89. You can override this using the `dest` property on the `creates` object associated with the operation.
  90. ### Asset Properties
  91. Assets expose properties that can be referenced in operations. The properties currently exposed are:
  92. * `duration`: duration of the audio/video in seconds (audio and video assets only)
  93. * `width`: width of the video in pixels (video and image assets only)
  94. * `height`: width of the video in pixels (video and image assets only)
  95. ## Operations
  96. Operations are transformations to perform on the inputs.
  97. An operation can produce one or more new assets, which can then be referenced in
  98. later operations.
  99. Most of the operation settings can be JavaScript expressions, for example:

  101. The above would set the `start` value to ten seconds before the end of `someAsset`.

  103. Today, JVCL supports several basic operations.

  122. # Complex Example
  123. Here is a complex example using multiple assets and operations.
  124. Note that comments, which are not usually legal in JSON, are allowed in JVCL files.
  125. If you have other JSON-aware tools that need to read JVLC files, you may not want to
  126. use this comment syntax. The `asset` and `operation` JSON objects also support a `comment`
  127. field, which can be used as well.
